Personal Statement
The Millennium Development Goals are to help the world and the all the people in it. The whole purpose is to share the commitment to the world we share and the action role we have in it. These 8 goals are something that has united most of the world together to come to understand one thing; there will be no progress in the world’s development unless they work together. So nearly every country has agreed to accomplish these goals. The goals being; Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger, Achieve Universal Primary Education, Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women, Reduce child Mortality, Improve Maternal Health, Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases. Ensure Environmental Sustainability, and Global Partnership for Development. These goals were agreed to be accomplished by 2015. However many parts of the world may not be able accomplish these goals, places such as Sub-Saharan Africa where they do not have many goals accomplished at all. In my country of Singapore however is not doing too bad.
Singapore’s implementation of the Millennium Development Goals is good for the country however they do not try very much. The one goal that they really do pay attention to is Environmental Sustainability. How they focus on that will be talked about late. I feel that One thing that Singapore needs to do is really start focusing on all the goals evenly so that they can move their country forward even more. While they are already a pretty well managed country there are many things they need to improve such as Gender Equality. Though I believe this I do admit that they need to focus on other things other then the Millennium Development Goals. One thing that they really need to focus on is improving their Civil Liberties and Political rights. These things are what are keeping Singapore from being a great country. Their Media has no freedom every news source is owned by a company controlled by the government. They do however equally represent both sides in the previous presidential election.
One Millennium Development Goals that Singapore has been able to keep up with well is Environmental Sustainability. It has one of the cleanest environments in the world. They are also making an eco-city with China called Tianjin The Eco-city is planned to be compact, with a good mix of land uses and based on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) principles. Each district is planned with amenities and jobs located close by. Local and centralized facilities are provided to serve the needs of residents in each neighborhood. Business Parks are located close to residential areas to provide employment for residents, which is within easy access of their homes. The emphasis on green transport is a key feature in the transport planning of the Eco-city. The aim is to increase trips via public transport and non-motorized modes of transport such as via bicycles and walking, within the Eco-city. To achieve this, non-motorized and motorized networks will be separated to minimize conflict between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, with priority given to pedestrians and non-motorized transport, as well as public transport. The Eco-city is planned with extensive green (vegetation) and blue (water) networks in mind to provide an endearing living and working environment. The green network will comprise a green lung at the core of the Eco-city and green-relief eco-corridors emanating from the lung to the other parts of the Eco-city. Water bodies in the Eco-city will be linked together for greater water circulation to enhance the ecology and to provide an attractive environment for waterfront development and water-based recreational activities. A wastewater pond will be rehabilitated and transformed into a clean and beautiful lake.
While Singapore is doing well environmental wise, they are not the best in the rest of the categories. I have made a plan in which they can distribute 50 million dollars among all eight of these goals which you can also view on this website.
